Among the photos: bison, mule deer, a few hunts, local scenery, chukar, big horn sheep, rosy finch, grizzly bears. There is a photo of a pen/ink drawing by Carolyn Anderson [former professor at CSU, Ft. Collins, then we heard, back to PA…if anyone knows how to contact her, we’d love to know if she also has copy of the barn that was near this house, Maxwell Ranch, that Cathy’s grandparents and then parents lived in for AGES].

Randy tells about his early years trapping. Mostly about coyotes, but also weasel/ermine. Over the years, he trapped other small fur-bearing animals such as martin, fox and beaver.
He got the top prices for his fur by the way he prepared it before taking it to the buyer. One of the old-timers was not happy that this whippersnapper got better prices for his mountain coyote hides.
Ermine photo by Cathy Selby, taken by our wood pile last spring. It took about 20 minutes trying to capture the quick moving critter, to get a decent photo.
At a few points, Bluetick hound, 12 year old Anson Eddy, voices his displeasure of being left out.

Randy gets frequent questions about uses of a 1” micrometer, mainly about using for handgun/revolver loads, as well as low powered rifles. He clears up the misconceptions about the uses, and why, that the 1” micrometer doesn’t work for them.
He also clears up a few misconceptions, derived from numerous emails and calls, about barrel twists, etc.

Our friend, Jimmy, and Randy put in as a “party” for a local, hard to draw for, elk permit in May. They were lucky enough to draw [if one draws, so does the other].
Jimmy works out of Jackson, running a guide service from his specially equipped van, for photography and sight seeing tours of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. https://bearwitnessjacksonhole.com/
He only booked a few tours, the first and last of Oct., then was over here with us for most of Oct. for an antelope hunt [all of us had doe/fawn tags, not lucky enough to draw buck tags] and for their antelope hunt.
While Jimmy has hunted a great deal, he’d never been on an elk hunt, so this was his first elk hunt. He was using a rifle Randy built for him [used the other custom RCR rifle on the antelope].
Randy shares the story and from photos taken by Lauren Johnson [one of the helpers], Cathy and Jimmy.

While Randy has made videos of various aspects of working up loads for your rifle, he feels it is time to revisit this subject.

Let’s start with using the information in reloading manuals, from any of the companies that publish them. There is “maximum working load” versus, “maximum load”.
Remember: if you are reloading, for getting the best accuracy, you must use a chronograph and a 1/10” micrometer.

Randy shares his experience, with his friend, Jimmy, and the dangerous situation they had with Buffalo Bore ammunition.
It was an due to an extreme overload of the .480 Ruger 410 loads.
Buffalo Bore had a less than acceptable reply to our first correspondence to them and have not responded since.
DO NOT trust Buffalo Bore ammunition to be safe, expecially their .480 Ruger 410 rounds.
Tim Sundles of Buffalo Bore has no concern that the ammunition from HIS company was extremely overloaded.
Having to use a nylon punch and a hammer to get the fired cases out of the Ruger .480 Alaskan is NOT “stickiness” as their reply was, it was unsafe.
All of the dimensions of the .480 Ruger Alaskan were spot on.
Be careful.

What is the strength factor of rifle actions?
There is some misinformation put out even by the manufacturers of rifle actions. It is probably a “cover our a**” reply, but it is the wrong answer.
Threre different steels used in rifle actions: 4140, 4340, 8620. Their tensile and yield strength is much, much higher than put out.
