For our last video of 2023: Randy reminisces about a neighbor of theirs from when he was growing up, Ted Ogston, who at one time was predator control for Yellowstone National Park, McKinley National Park and later Death Valley.
Also, in the video, we show the cover pages of 3 booklets, two by Ted, one by his wife, Helen, that they wrote and had published by the Cody Enterprise in 1970 and 1971. We are not aware of any outlet for the copies. The Cody Enterprise, when contacted, did not know anything about them. If I hear anything back from them, I will add the information here.

Randy shares a hair-raising story of friends, one he’s known for about 56 years, another over 30 years, and the third in the party, who he knows of.
Names are not mentioned to protect them from harassment from internet keyboard warriors.
During the course of their elk hunt they had two grizzlies charge into grab the elk they were getting ready to pack out. One had to be killed, to preserve their lives, in extremely close quarters. They have been exonerated by both US Fish and Wildlife and WY Game & Fish as having acted in self-defense, no charges were levied against them, rightly so.
Two of the hunters have told the events to Randy and Cathy, in detail.
They are all fortunate that they were able to get out of the events alive and unharmed, due to their quick thinking and reflexes.

Randy tells of an old friend, Roy Glasgow that had a run in with a grizzly bear and saved himself with his Bausch & Lomb binoculars back in the day! Bausch & Lomb even made an ad, featured at least in American Rifleman years ago.
Also, another grizzly attack happened when Roy was hunting with friend, Vern Spencer. Vern was attacked, and lived.
Finally, a friend of ours, Nate Vance, an outfitter, was attacked, and lived, through a middle of the night grizzly attack in their hunting camp a couple of decades ago.

This method of measuring for pressure was developed over 70 years ago by the late Vernon Speer. I’ve not found any better way to do so.
Sit down, take notes.
Whether you have a 1 inch tenth micrometer or a flat anvil micrometer, Randy instructs on the best method for measuring cases, rimmed or unrimmed, magnum or not, it is all done the same place, in the same way.

Randy talks about some of the history about 7mm’s being used for big game hunting. He was great friends with Les Bowman, who was instrumental in starting the use of the caliber for hunting big game in North America and later around the world.
Les worked with Remington to bring the 7MM out in 1962.
In 1984 Randy also created and developed his own 7mmx.404 Wapiti Express.

Randy tells a bit of 30-06 history and how to load to potential. His FN Mauser 30-06 shoots 150 gr. Swift Sirrocco bullets at 3160 fps. He goes on to make suggestions for the reloader on the best powders, bullets and weights, as well as cases to use to load for full potential.

Randy’s focus is on the best bullets for taking game animals, the pros and cons of different bullet construction for nearer shots, and at longer distance, but with the condition that the extreme long range is not hunting but sniping.Berger bullets and any target bullets are not the ideal hunting bullets. Randy demonstrates his method for trimming a rifle case, using a 6MM PPC case, on one of his lathes.
And NO, he is in no danger working on this lather or his other by wearing long sleeve shirts. He operates very, very safely, has been doing this for over 50 years, wearing long sleeves at his machinery in cool/cold months, and never even a close call. Because he knows how to operate safely while wearing long sleeves.
